Key: E minor. German. Text: Johann Frank.
For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. The cantataAllein zu dir, Herr Jesu ChristBWV 33, composed for the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity in 1724, is now the only vocal work by Bach for which the complete source material from the time of composition can be published in facsimile. It is one of the few works by Bach for which material from the first performance survives almost complete. But this is held in different locations on several continents: the composition score is preserved in the Scheide Library at Princeton , US , the performance parts in the Bach- Archiv Leipzig and the libretto of 1724 in the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg . All these components have now been published in a high-quality facsimile edition. This valuable edition, with a slip case, offers both specialists and lovers of Bach's music a unique insight into the composer's working methods and the changing performing circumstances he encountered. Additional information is contained in a detailed commentary (in German and English) by Christoph Wolff and Peter Wollny . BWV 33 belongs to the unique annual cycle of chorale cantatas composed by Bach in 1724/25, the second year of his Leipzig tenure. The cantata is one of the very few works where all the relevant source materials for the first performance have been preserved but are kept in various libraries throughout the world : The composing score is kept at the Scheide Library in Princeton, the vocal-instrumental performing parts at the Bach Archive Leipzig and the original libretto at the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg. The facsimile offers invaluable insights into the composer's workings and the changing conditions for performances under his direction. - Published to commorate the 325 th anniversary of Bach's birth on 21 March 2010 - Limited edition of 100 copies - Net proceeds go to the Bach Archive, Leipzig

The cantata Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz BWV 136 was composed in Bach's first year as Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig and was first performed on the 8th Sunday after Trinity, the 18th July 1723. The librettist is unknown. The title of the cantata is taken from verse 23 of Psalm 139: Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz; prufe mich und erfahre, wie ich's meine. (Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts) The opening chorus forms an extended fugue, framed by string writing bursting with energy. The obbligato horn accentuates and enriches the movement with a special tonal color. The alto aria in F sharp minor (movement 3) comprises a trio movement with an oboe d'amore as solo instrument in a contrasting range - a presto middle section which dramatically charges the words Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet (For the fury of its zeal will destroy). In the duet (movement 5) the text is sung by tenor and bass line by line, sometimes imitating contrapuntally, and sometimes both singing together dramatically in homophonic writing. A simple chorale setting to the melody Auf meinen lieben Gott concludes the cantata. Particularly charming here is the violin which joins the four vocal parts as an independent part. After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at the end of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata texts by the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this work to the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria Auf,auf, mit hellem Schall with solo trumpet is note-worthy since in place of a middle section in the aria, here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112800.

The cantata dates from Bach's time in Weimar. The instrumental scoring of four violas and basso continuo - in the Leipzig performances enhanced by two recorders doubling viola I and II at the octave - is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre. It lends a dark, luxurious sound to the four movements which is gently illuminated by the recorders. The work - with its instrumental sinfonia, a short secco recitative and an extended accompagnato recitative (both of which contain arioso inserts), a short soprano aria and a simple closing chorale - makes no great demands on the performing forces. Admirers of text interpretation by means of instrumental figuration will be richly rewarded. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101800.
